Reflexology

Reflexology is type of massage which usually focuses on the feet, although sometimes the hands are also massaged. Those who practice reflexology believe that by massaging the feet their actions can have various benefits for other parts of the body. There are no strict guidelines on how reflexology is supposed to work and there are many different variations, it is however a widely held belief amongst the advocates of reflexology that massaging certain parts of the feet will correspond to a certain area of the body. It is believed by some that reflexology can be used to manipulate an alleged energy field that surrounds every person which may block their potential for healing.

Reflexology has been practiced since the mid thirties although it was developed approximately twenty years prior and has been widely practiced ever since. Reflexology has garnered an increased level of popularity recently as alternative medicines and holistic treatments have become quite fashionable.

Reflexology has been subjected to a great deal of criticism, particularly by doctors who worry that people may turn to reflexology as a treatment to a potentially serious illness even though there is no proof as to what, if any, effect reflexology will actually have. Further criticisms are levelled at the fact that there is very little regulation in the field and that it is possible to become a fully qualified reflexologist within six month through just home study.
